FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I bring?
For Indoor Programs - non-scuffing running shoes/gym shoes, comfortable, athletic clothing, a water bottle and a great attitude!
For Outdoor Programs - Cleats or turf shoes are ideal, along with comfortable, athletic clothing, a water bottle and a great attitude!
Does Ultimate Frisbee Have Referees?
In ultimate frisbee, referees are called observers, however they are typically only utilized in senior, competitive environments (professional or university level, high school provincial championships, etc.). Though even at these levels, observers first try to get the teams/players to reach a resolution, however they can step in with a final decision if necessary.
By having the players ref themselves, it forces participants to develop skills around listening, fair play and communication.
That said, in our leagues we will have staff on hand providing general oversight. Though we will always push players/teams to manage their own matches, an observer will be available to try and help teams reach decisions, if necessary.
Do I need prior experience to participate?
Short answer, "no".
Our programs/training benefits rookies to advanced participants and we pair players with participants at similar levels.
Ideally, we recommend signing up for our fall and winter programs as they will teach the fundamentals of the sport, and help participants enter spring and summer leagues with confidence.
Are all the progams co-ed?
Yes.
Ultimate frisbee, at the TDSB, TCDSB and high school level is a co-ed sport. In turn, we run our programs to help develop our participants to one day represent their schools.
How are coaches vetted?
All coaches are required to pass a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC), if over 18 years of age. All coaches are required to have experience playing ultimate frisbee, and ideally some experience working with/teaching athletic activities to kids.
Coaches are also encouraged to take training courses related to youth sports. For instance, Marc Magraken, the Founder of Etobicoke Ultimate, has a clean VSC, and has taken numerous coaching courses, including "The Rule of 2", "FUNdamentals", "Making Ethical Decisions", and has taken concussion training as well as many other youth coaching related courses.
Is there a Club (competitive) stream?
Not yet. We are a newly formed league and at Etobicoke Ultimate, we truly believe our area is a hot spot for athleticism.
As we grow, we will look to build out a competitive stream, however, we already start at earlier age groups than many programs out there, so that option may not exist for some of our players until they are older anyway.
